Building Effective Online Galleries

This might start like it’s a little off-topic for a blog post about searching for images, but the whole point about the Excire blog is to help make you more efficient, especially when searching for your images. So, for those of you who are working professional photographers, aspiring to be, or a serious hobbyist who likes to show their very best work, let’s talk about your online galleries.

 

It’s all about quality NOT quantity, yet, so many of you have too many images in your galleries, and many of them are repetitive, boring and don’t show your very best work. Remember, your website is about what you sell, and your blog is about what’s in your heart. The two work together. And if you’re a hobbyist, but aspiring to be recognized as an artist, then your goal is no different than a working professional – you want people to see and appreciate your work.

 

Here are few tips to help strengthen your gallery presentations:

 

  • Only post your very best work. Every image should be a “wow” shot – meaning, it’s so good you’d only have to show somebody one image to get hired, or, just one photograph for them to want to see more.

 

  • Keep your galleries small. You don’t need hundreds of images to make your point. Stay quality driven with 20-30 of your very best images.

 

  • Theme your galleries in a way that makes sense. For example, have a little logical synergy in the categories you’re sharing. A photographer hoping to be recognized for great landscape and outdoor work needs to share images that fit the categories. Often what I see is a mix of landscape and outdoor and then suddenly family shots that are unrelated.

Another example would be a portrait photographer who suddenly mixes in some tabletop work or fine art landscape. These images don’t fit with the core specialty being represented, and will often drive away viewers instead of keeping them actively looking at the gallery.

 

  • Use Excire Search and Seach Pro to find your very best images and share them in a logical sequence. Outdoor images could logically be broken down into landscapes, wildlife, sunsets, macro work of outdoor subjects, etc. Plus, for a stronger look to your galleries – use key word descriptions like color to create an artistic flow to your presentation.

 

We live in an Internet world.  As of June 2018, 55.1% of the world’s population has internet access. (Wikipedia) And, wandering through cyberspace, it appears that 80% of households in the United States have Internet access.  Now, think about the number of people who have the potential to view your photography. Don’t they deserve to see the very best in imaging?
